If you are a pet owner, you probably spend countless hours looking at cute pictures and reading heartwarming stories about animals. Don’t worry, we do too! There is, however, some important information that can be found on the internet. Here is a list of five websites all animal lovers should know about:
- ASPCA: The ASPCA website is a great resource for those who suspect an animal is being abused or neglected. You can also find helpful information on pet care, adoption, advice on coping with the loss of a pet, and ways you can become involved in the fight against animal cruelty. (PLEASE NOTE: if you observe or suspect an animal is being abused or neglected, and that time is a factor, including animals that appear to be very sick, injured, or locked in parked cars during extremely hot or cold temperatures, notify the police or your local humane society immediately.)
- American Veterinary Medical Association: The AVMA website offers a great deal of information on animal wellness, including articles and news about disasters, pet food and other safety recalls, the relationship between animal and public health, and updates on outbreaks of zoonotic diseases.
- Poison Control: If you are worried about possible toxins or poisons in or around your home, and the risk they may pose to your pet, there are two websites you may find helpful. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center and Pet Poison Helpline websites both feature detailed lists of known plants, foods, and other things your pet should avoid. Both sites offer a 24-hour helpline that you can call with any questions, but be prepared to pay a consultation fee. (PLEASE NOTE: if you suspect your pet has come in contact with or ingested a toxin or poison, call your veterinarian or an emergency veterinary clinic immediately.)
- Dog Licenses: Dogs over three months of age must have a dog license, which can be obtained at your local county treasurer’s office or a participating agent (lifetime licenses must be purchased at your local treasurer’s office). More information regarding dog licenses and dog ownership can be found on the PA Department of Agriculture website. Don’t forget, Chester County residents can purchase annual dog licenses at Braxton’s Animal Works!
- Philadelphia Pet Pages: The Philly Pet Pages promotes itself as being the number one pet resource directory for the Philadelphia area and NJ, and includes contact information for adoption and rescue organizations, pet care facilities, veterinarians, and groomers. In the 2010 edition, there is also a list of local dog parks on page 32. One of the best ways to keep dogs healthy and happy is to take them to a dog park. This is not only a great bonding experience for you and your dog, but exercise also helps them expend that extra energy that often leads to behavioral problems.
You can always contact Braxton’s if you have any questions regarding your pets. Our website also has a helpful list of local pet professionals and shelters, as well as information about upcoming events.
