Backyard Birding: Now is the Time

May 13, 2020 By //  by Ann Miller 1 Comment

Braxton’s Bird Aisle

If you have ever been interested in attracting a variety of birds to your backyard, now is a perfect time. Since many of us are quarantined at home, setting up bird feeders and watching to see who visits may help the time pass.

Fortunately, it is easy to attract new birds to your backyard by offering what they need most: food, water, shelter, and nesting sites. By adding new features to your yard that address these needs, you’ll soon find a wide range of new and unexpected species nearby.

Most of us fill our feeders with sunflower seeds or a mix from the local store. Droll Yankees suggests that if you want to attract a variety of birds to your backyard, you should have several stations with different types of food.

At Braxton’s, we offer a wide variety of bird feeders as well as bird food. If you are interested, ask about our bird section when you call-in and we’ll add it to your order.

If you are new to this, you may want to check out this article by Kaytee to avoid making some common mistakes.

If you are still hesitant, consider the fact that birdwatching is good for YOU! According to a 2017 study from the University of Exeter in England, watching birds of any kind from a window or around your neighborhood is associated with lower levels of depression, anxiety, and stress. The positive association applied regardless of species and whether or not it was in an urban or rural setting. The evidence shows it’s not about identifying bird types, but instead, interacting with birds.

So why not give it a try? I did, and I am thoroughly enjoying it. I now realize that the birds have certain feeding times, and I find myself looking forward to seeing who shows up.

Don’t forget to ask one of our crew members about our bird department when you call-in your next order.

Interesting article. For me, the eagle is a symbol of strength and courage. I like the hunting picture. The eagle looks very fast and impressive
