Catnip Craze: The Purrfect High for Felines – Unleash the Inner Party Animal in Your Kitty!

September 20, 2023 By //  by Tiffany Braxton Leave a Comment

As pet owners, we always want to make sure that our furry friends are happy and healthy. One of the ways we can do that is by understanding their natural behavior and tendencies, like their love for catnip. Have you ever wondered what catnip is and how it affects your cat? In this blog post, we’ll go into the history of catnip, how we discovered its effects on pets, and the many benefits it has for your feline friend.

What is Catnip?

Catnip is a herb that belongs to the mint family. It’s native to Europe, Asia, and Africa and was brought over to North America by settlers in the 1700s. Since then, it has become a popular herb used by pet owners to entertain their cats. But did you know that the use of catnip dates back to ancient times? The ancient Egyptians, for instance, used catnip for its medicinal properties, while the Romans used it as a natural insecticide.

It wasn’t until the 1700s that catnip’s effects on cats were discovered. Scientists found that the active ingredient in catnip, nepetalactone, was responsible for the euphoric effects it had on cats. When cats smell or ingest catnip, it triggers a response in their brain that causes them to become excited and playful. This effect usually lasts for about 10-15 minutes.

What are the Benefits of Catnip?

So what are the benefits of catnip for your cat? First of all, it’s a great way to provide sensory stimulation for cats who are indoors or have limited outdoor space. The playful behavior that catnip induces can help reduce boredom and stress in cats. Additionally, catnip can be used as a training tool for cats. By using catnip as a reward, you can reinforce good behaviors in your cat. You can also use catnip to help correct unwanted behaviors such as furniture scratching by encouraging scratch on healthy outlets with catnip sprinkled on it.

How can I use Catnip?

There are several ways to use catnip with your cat. You can sprinkle it on a scratch pad or toy, stuff it in a toy, or even use it in a slow feeder. Some cats even enjoy eating fresh catnip as a snack. Just remember that not all cats respond to catnip – approximately 30% of cats are indifferent to it.

  • Enhance your cat’s interest in using their scratching post by gently rubbing catnip into it.
  • Enhance active play and exercise by adding catnip to toys.
  • To help shy cats feel more at ease in a new environment and facilitate smooth cat-to-cat introductions, try sprinkling catnip. This can encourage them to feel comfortable and promote a sense of calmness.
  • To alleviate anxiety and promote a calming effect during car trips, consider using catnip in the carrier or crate. This can help create a sedative state for your feline companion.

Can my Dog benefit from Catnip?

But what about dogs? While catnip has little to no effect on dogs, there is a similar herb called valerian root that can have a calming effect on them. Valerian root is often used as a natural remedy for anxiety or hyperactivity in dogs. Of course, it’s always important to consult with a veterinarian before giving your pet any new herbs or supplements.

Overall, catnip can be a great tool for pet owners to keep their cats happy and stimulated. By understanding the history and effects of catnip, you can provide your cat with an enjoyable and healthy experience. Whether you use it in a toy or as a training tool, your cat will surely thank you for it. And while catnip may not have the same effect on dogs, there are still natural remedies, like valerian root, that can benefit them as well. As always, consult with your veterinarian before incorporating any new herbs or supplements into your pet’s routine.
