National Pet Hydration Month

May 6, 2022 By //  by Ann Miller Leave a Comment

NATIONAL PET HYDRATION MONTH PROVIDES THE OPPORTUNITY TO REMIND PET OWNERS ABOUT THE DANGERS OF DEHYDRATION AND OVERHYDRATION

Keeping pets hydrated on these hot, summer days is so important that PetSafe designated July as National Pet Hydration Awareness Month. July is the hottest month of the year in some areas of the country and that is certainly true for us. With temperatures in the high 90s, it is important to be conscious of the amount of water our pets are consuming.

Did you know that our pets need 1 ounce of water per pound of bodyweight? Some pets don’t even get this on a regular day, let alone during extreme temperatures. And, we are not just talking about dogs. Cats and birds along with dogs require proper hydration to avoid serious health risks.

In order to circumvent problems related to dehydration, you must first be aware of the signs.

DEHYDRATION SYMPTOMS

  • Loss of skin elasticity.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Vomiting with or without diarrhea.
  • Reduced energy levels and lethargy.
  • Panting.
  • Sunken, dry-looking eyes.
  • Dry nose.
  • Dry, sticky gums.
  • Thick saliva.

PREVENTION

The best way to prevent dehydration in your pet is to keep freshly-filtered water available at all times so they are enticed to drink the proper amount of water. You can also train yourself to change your pet’s water each time you reach for your bottle of water to keep yourself healthy and hydrated. These furry guys depend on us for access to fresh water.

With the high temperatures that we have been experiencing recently, it is crucial that you are aware of your pet’s hydration level. Stop into Braxton’s and check out some of the hydration products available on the market. One of our knowledgeable staff members would be happy to help you choose the product that is just right for your pet.

Do you have any secrets to remember to keep your pets hydrated?
